Hi Eagles!
Sekolah Ciputra recently held its annual cross country, a sports competition in which students are encouraged to participate by running or speed walking. First and foremost, the OSIS team would like to sincerely congratulate the red house for obtaining the most points this school year. The cross country event has brought our attention to the mascots present during the event. Initiated by the 2021-2022 OSIS team, we have teamed up with the PYP Student Council (STUCO) to create mascots for each house color, along with a mascot representing the school, with the mascots being animals native to different parts of Indonesia. The mascots for Sekolah Ciputra, red, blue, yellow, and green, respectively, are the eagle, sun bear, Javanese rhinoceros, Sumatran tiger, and komodo dragon.
School and house mascots (from left to right): Monto the Javanese rhinoceros, Zuko the sun bear, Felix the eagle, Taz the Sumatran tiger, and Pascal the komodo dragon.
First, let us introduce the school’s mascot, Felix! The eagle represents leadership and authority. Having this eagle as one’s spirit animal means that one is a high achiever and has qualities of a leader; visionaries who believe in the power of expanding their self-discoveries and striving to reach greater personal freedom. If you adopt this eagle symbolism in life, there is nothing that can or will stop you from pushing your limits.

Secondly, the mascot for the house of courage and compassion, the red house, Zuko the sun bear! Native to the forests of Southeast Asia, the sun bear has a small body but mighty power. The name “sun bear” comes from the bib-shaped white or golden patch on their chests, which is said to represent the rising sun. They hunt with their claws, sharp teeth, as well as their strong muscles. The legend behind the rise of Zuko is that there were once two tribes of Sulawesi, one keeping order and one keeping peace, both filled with rage and hatred towards each other. A fight for resources happened, but on the brink of downfall, a growl was heard from the forest, and came Zuko, a legend who hasn’t been seen for thousands of years. Both tribes bowed down as Zuko left his humble abode to come and stop the commotion. Zuko unrolled his affection and tenderness to the people, making them reflect on their actions. From then on, kindness lived in the hearts of both tribes with the courage of Zuko. The slogan for the red house is, “Gawi Manuntung Waja Sampai Kaputing”, which, in English, means once you start something, don’t stop until it’s finished.

Next is the mascot of the house of dreamers and curiosity, the blue house mascot: Monto the Javanese rhinoceros! A critically endangered species, the Javanese rhinoceros is often assumed to be aggressive, though the truth is the opposite. Javanese rhinoceros are gentle creatures who love roaming free and nibbling on grass. The values upheld in the blue house actually originated from Monto’s story. Monto has always been a great dreamer, whether it was to save Earth or to live a life without fear amongst humans. At times, he’d have nightmares of a traumatic incident where his family’s life was tragically grasped by poachers. Unfortunately, Javanese rhinos are still living in a state of fright, caused by the selfishness of humans to steal their horns. Fighting back was never Monto’s thing, although he often dreams of being able to stop poachers. Most of the time, he’d let curiosity take over himself by finding out ways to stop the slaughter. Once, he got the courage to fight back, but as soon as he got close, he ran away in fear. He was always eager to find solutions, but his traumatic past says no. One day, he dreamt yet again of saving his kind and saw how everyone was cheering him. Monto woke up with a big smile on his face and a great feeling that he was able to stop the poachers that morning. On the same day, he stumbled upon a few rhinos trembling in fear against the poachers. This time, Monto rushed in and fought back once and for all. His story reminds us of our responsibility to be diligent caregivers for our planet. Because of this, the slogan for the blue house is “Hakaryo Guno Mamayu Bawono”, meaning that we have to create to elevate.

Fourth of all, the mascot of the house of hope and uplifting, the yellow house, is Taz the Sumatran tiger! This endangered species is special because they have stripes that are significantly different from other tigers due to them being closer to each other. Other than that, the tiger’s coat has the color of dark orange, which allows them to blend in with the natural environment of Sumatra. Taz’s story starts when the tiger lived in darkness, waiting for his calling in the darkest cave in the highest mountains of Sumatra. One day, the sun shined right above his head as he heard a voice that said, “Now is your time my son, the world needs hope. It needs you”. Taz rushed down from the mountains as the sun followed him. When he arrived in the village, there was nothing but drought. People were suffering. Consequently, Taz rumbled at the sun, the loudest he ever roared before, and the earth beneath him shook as raindrops started to pour on the villagers—once again giving them hope… With the motto of “Bumi Bertuah Negeri Beradat”, which means that a prosperous land comes with a virtuous society, the yellow house is set to have hope and courage for a better world.

Last but not least, it’s the mascot of the house of instinct, peace, and ambition, the green house mascot: Pascal the komodo dragon! Komodos are strong animals with speed, often associated with Indonesia. Being the biggest monitor lizard in the world, the komodo dragon can only be found on the islands of Komodo, Rinca, and Flores. Behind the green house’s characteristics lies Pascal’s story, which inspired the creation of the green house traits. Human greed is nature’s worst enemy. Trees cut down, lands taken over, causing the faunas to lose their habitats, their homes. At this point, their homes are at their lowest point, with no spark of hope left. On a day of a sunless sky, Pascal was by the river, all alone. Hearing a lot of chaos, his curiosity increased, and wanted to take a look. He has always had the urge to look, but his guts told him not to. He took a small peek and there he saw a ruptured land, animals were fighting for their last bits of food and shelter. Pascal had to do something, he stopped the chaos with all his great ambition. Slowly building up the ruptured land, making peace, and soon nature healed. This is why the green house’s slogan is “Jaga Waka Nua”—to protect and prosper our school values, and to maintain the dignity of our home; the place we feel safe.

All four house mascots and the school mascot have interesting and inspiring backstories, all with the objective of saving the world and making it a better place. The OSIS team hopes that these mascots will bring pride and inspiration to each member in each house; to strive to be a better individual.
