MYP Personal Project Article, Volume 1: April!

Hi Eagles!

The MYP Personal Project is a significant element of the MYP curriculum. The Personal Project is a project specialized for Grade 10 students and it must be completed by all Grade 10 students to graduate from the MYP curriculum and enter the Diploma Programme (DP). The OSIS team has decided to conduct several interviews revolving around the MYP Personal Project. We’ve interviewed Mr. Fery (PP Coordinator), Ms. Anik (PP Supervisor) and 6 Grade 10 students (Tatyana, Claire, Tiffenie, Jasmine, Cheryl & Venezia) who are doing their Personal Project this year.

A student named Tiffenie Yantono is doing a project on creating a sustainable / eco-friendly house. The inspiration towards this project that she has is from how people make recycled bags and rather than doing a small action, she decided to why not start making building materials that are eco-friendly and will affect the society at a larger scale. Throughout her MYP Personal Project journey, she has experienced several difficulties such as building the house and time management skills with building the product and doing the report writing. In her opinion, the key factor of her product is in the material choices used in the house which uses environmentally friendly materials. She stated that she was satisfied with the progress she made during the project and tried her best in doing so too. Her PP supervisor this year was Pak Makali. She said that she consistently held interviews with her supervisor to ask questions about construction and how to interpret this idea into a real life application. She says that Pak Makali is very helpful as he has a lot of knowledge about architecture.

The next student we interviewed is a student named Claire Faustine. Her project revolves around making biopesticides from cigarette butts. The inspiration towards this project that she has is from searching world issues and then saw cigarette pollution as one of the biggest issues and she found out that the compositions of pesticides is similar to compositions of cigarettes. Throughout her MYP Personal Project journey, she has experienced several difficulties such as meeting deadlines and being able to organize other tasks such as exams while also meeting deadlines for the MYP Personal Project. In her opinion, the key factor of her product is that she said that this has never been done before. Her PP supervisor this year was Mr. Adam Bachmeyer. She said that Mr. Adam was really helpful in giving her tons of tips to improve her PP and giving her templates to make her research easier.

This is an image that we got from Claire which shows her experimenting with making biopesticides from cigarette butts.

The third student we interviewed is a student named Tatyana Widyasari Njoto. She is doing a project on discussing how beauty standards femininity and people around us and also how culture affects beauty standards. Her inspiration for her topic for this MYP Personal Project actually came from a talk with her sister, therefore as she and her sister love to talk about this topic, she decided why not do a PP on this certain topic. Throughout her MYP Personal Project journey, she experienced difficulty in having the motivation in starting the project. She said that it is hard to have the motivation to work but once you’ve gone through it, it gets easier by the minute. In her opinion, the key factor of her product is that it discusses something prominent during our time and how beauty standards affect all ages regardless of the standards. As the PP is a new thing for every Grade 10 student, each and every student doing the PP will receive a supervisor which Tatyana says she is thankful for. Her PP supervisor this year was Pak Thomas. She said that Pak Thomas was really helpful in guiding her into making the PP report and making all the success criteria.

The next student we interviewed is a student named Jasmine Suteja. Her project revolves around making free energy light bulbs. Her inspiration mainly revolves around renewable energy. She wanted to do something related to energy, specifically renewable clean energy for her PP. As this involves a product making skill, she said that the main problem or issue was with constructing the product itself. She said that she needs time to learn how to do the wiring system with Electrical and copper wires. With building the product this results in swollen hands from contrast times as it requires both a lot of time and effort for it. Another difficulty she faced was on due dates as it was limited and she said that she was struggling to meet deadlines but eventually pulled it through. She was pleased and happy with her product as she was able to make her idea come true. Her PP supervisor this year was Ms. Tika. She said that even though Ms. Tika has never taught her in Science classes, Ms. Tika always gives her a lot of suggestions and materials to borrow for her PP which eventually grants the success of her PP product.

The fifth student we interviewed is a student named Cheryl Loemantoro. She is doing a project on a genderless uniform as she herself is very interested in fashion. Her inspiration comes from her interest with the fashion industry and also her wanting to abolish gender norms such as what boys should wear or girls should wear which eventually reflects towards her interests and high fashion skills. Her main difficulty that she faced with the PP project was time-management skills. She said that she encountered a lot of other tasks therefore she needs to be careful in managing her time with PP and other tasks such as projects, summatives, formatives and others. The key factor about her topic or product in her opinion is that the topic that she raised which is about genderless uniform is rarely being talked and is a very unique topic to talk about. Her PP supervisor this year was Ms. Hanny. She said that Ms. Hanny was very helpful in answering all the questions she had and made sure all her tasks were completed on time and also Ms. Hanny Gives her a lot of valuable feedback to improve the quality of the report writing.

Last but not least we interviewed another student named Venezia Ferrari. Her topic was about research and scientific experiments on healthy rice to create short emissions videos about cooked rice based off of experimental results and to find the lowest glucose level which ultimately found the healthiest one for humans to consume. Her inspiration comes from her family’s discussion and also her interest in food science and chemistry. Her difficulties in doing the PP were in conducting the experiments. She said that her key factor was all because she did the experiment by herself which she said was very hard yet very fun to do. She was very satisfied with her P because her experiments ran smoothly and she was able to meet all the deadlines. Her PP supervisor this year was Ms. Wanda. She said that Ms. Wanda was very helpful as she shared a lot of her own opinion and ideas about experimental procedures regarding the results and also supported the report writing by giving guidelines and reminders to finish the report writing.

After hearing from 6 PP students we also have interviewed this year’s PP Coordinator, Mr. Fery. As this year's PP Coordinator, Mr. Fery has some words to say towards the success of this year’s MYP Personal Project:

It is the climax of how students express their personal interests in their last year of MYP (Grade 10). They should do this project independently while balancing their academic works and use the ATL skills during the project development and product goals. They also need to set their parameters of success and plan their actions. At the end, they need to reflect on their project impact and evaluate their product. This year, many challenges were faced by students. Limitation of movement and space, distractions, time management, and doing the Personal Project while there are so many other tasks that they need to finish at the same time are their big challenges. As a PP coordinator, I feel proud of all students attempting to do PP to show that they grow as a risk taker generation. There are some tips and tricks that I will give to next year PP students. If you wanna make a good PP, you should: Relate your PP with your mastery personal interest, make a point discussion per strand of each criterion, active consultation with supervisor, if you don't have any clue to solve your PP problem, please contact your PP coordinator, check and complete your managebac, follow scale priority to do your Personal Project, READ the guide and assessment criterion expectation as the parameter of your final report submission and don't forget to produce interesting products to be demonstrated in the PP exhibition.

After seeing the point of view of PP from students and the PP coordinator, the OSIS team has also interviewed 1 PP supervisor in Ms. Anik to get insights on her perspectives as a PP supervisor. This year, she had 2 students to supervise. The main difficulty that she faced was meeting with the students. A tip for students facing PP in the upcoming years is that they should all be initiative to meet with the PP supervisor as meeting regularly with the supervisor will make it easier for the supervisor to know their progress. The most important thing for Ms. Anik is commitment. The student should always share what kinds of projects they have and should meet regularly so that the supervisor will have a big picture of how they can help the supervisee. The difficulty the students face in this area (cooking) is creating the product because they need to discuss with the supervisor and also have to talk about the process. In her opinion the MYP Personal Project helps students to improve or enhance their skills in design skills (design cycle), research skills, referencing skills, time management, responsibility and being initiative skills. Design skills are clearly highlighted through starting from the planning, to the product, then evaluation and reflection. Research and referencing is important in how they write the essay and how they use different sorts of media and representations. Time-management skills are also one of the most important skills needed in a long term project like PP. Being able to meet deadlines and also figure out what to do is very important. Ms. Anik also said that students have to take initiative when meeting with their supervisor and have to be responsible with what they are doing.

You might be wondering, why is the PP very important or very useful for your future. Ms. Anik says that PP is important, first it's because of the IB, second this is about our vision, how we will develop our vision and build our research skills. It is about how you will see the case from another perspective and how to investigate. Personal project is important, as it goes more in depth into your personal interest, which is a path (the beginning) to your projects in the IB diploma. Her role as a PP supervisor is mainly not that much as the PP supervisor doesn’t have a lot of roles in the process as the supervisors are the ones who guide the students to the right path. The supervisor focuses on how to map the supervisee’s project and guides them to reach their goals. The supervisor also helps the student succeed in the making of the project. As a supervisor, Ms. Anik believes that whether the PP is successful or not depends on the student, as during meetings, the PP supervisor’s will understand the students vision and what they think.

Before we come to the conclusion, Mr. Terry has several words to say in regards to the Personal Project. This PP event started on Wednesday 16 March the High School of Sekolah Ciputra was a hub of activity as Grade 10 students presented and exhibited their MYP Personal Project. The MYP personal project is a long-term practical exploration designed to allow students to take part in a self-directed independent learning experience. It assesses students’ Approaches To Learning (ATL) skills for self-management, research, communication, collaboration, critical and creative thinking. Students are encouraged to practice and strengthen their ATL skills, to connect classroom learning with personal experience, and to develop their own interests for lifelong learning. Students create a set of Success Criteria for use at the end of the Project to grade and reflect on their own work. They work independently on projects close to their hearts and learn how to read, interpret and follow written criteria provided by MYP. Ultimately, students learn about themselves as learners, timekeepers, researchers and creators. This year there were many interesting projects, some requiring students to build something, make something, learn something or raise awareness about a topic. Topics included mental health issues, environmental awareness, sports, bike maintenance, gender norms, craft making, technical and mechanical engineering and many others. Students demonstrated their understanding, awareness and ability to implement projects on topics they are passionate about and each of them was able to demonstrate and express themselves to a very well supported event. Well done Grade 10!

In terms of rules, participants must upload evidence on the day they bike. To do this, take a screenshot of the distance that you had captured in your application. Numerous apps can be utilized in order to conduct this competition such as Strava, Map Ride, Kamoot and others. In addition, participants can only upload the evidence twice (2x) maximum. Otherwise, the system will reject any evidence exceeding the limit. For further information about this challenge, you may open the following link:

As a conclusion, the MYP Personal Project is a climax of student's personal interest expression for students in the last MYP years, Grade 10. It's very important and will teach all of us a lot of useful skills and lessons. Several tips from the PP coordinator, PP supervisor and PP students for future students doing PP the next following years is that you need to be committed, you also need to be initiative in making decisions and also you need to have good time-management skills so that you are able to submit before deadlines while also being balance with other school activities or tasks. The MYP Personal Project is a one in a lifetime project and we all should give our best effort in it to get the most valuable lessons out of it.
