Hi Eagles!
For this month’s second article, we’ve decided to switch things up a bit. We're here to explore the different subjects that are offered in our high school. For the month of October we will be showcasing 2 exciting subjects that students can take, especially in DP. Those 2 subjects are Global Politics & Design. So let's get started to know more about these subjects!
Let's start with Global Politics. Global politics is an exciting, dynamic subject that draws on a variety of disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, reflecting the complex nature of many contemporary political issues. It also talks and gives us an understanding about current global events. Some topics that you will learn in this subject will be about power, sovereignty, international relations, international organizations such as the UN and any current news all around the world. Learning Global Politics will create an impact on our lives and it will explain why certain things are happening. This subject is going to be very useful for anyone seeking to enter a career that relates with law, politics and international relations. And the best thing is that Mr. Stuart will be teaching you guys!
The most important part of being a Global Politics student is being curious about topics that are being discussed during the lessons and any current trending world news. That includes keeping up to date with the latest news around the world. A final expectation after taking a 2 year course of Global Politics is that students will be more aware with how the world works and how we can build a change to make a huge impact especially in tackling global issues. Global Politics is challenging in some bits. As the world keeps on moving, Global Politics' subject will also change overtime as it follows what's in the news. The ideas of the lessons are fixed but the content of the lessons might differ depending on what is happening around us. For example, this couple of years students have learned more about news related to the pandemic as the pandemic is still happening but when it comes to an end in the near future, the news related with the pandemic will not be used in the lessons. Anyway, this subject is one of the best subjects to take. All of the lessons will be exciting as it is filled with frequent debates, discussions and socratic seminars which will improve all of our public speaking skills and critical-thinking skills.
Other than Global Politics, we also have Design. In Design, students focus on practical and creative thinking areas to solve design problems. This subject is taught right from the start in Grade 7 and can be further taken in Grade 11 and 12. For instance, Grade 8 is currently learning how to create meals to boost the immune system and Grade 10 is learning Conceptual Modelling and Pictorial Sketchings & Anthropometry. In order to showcase the student’s understanding and creativity, projects are assigned to students where they can additionally use the teachings from classes. The range of topics will help in developing and strengthening attributes of the learner profile, development of solving worldwide problems, communication skills, Mathematical skills and even scientific influences. Moral principles such as caring and sense of compassion will also be enhanced. Design has been more different and updated especially with Mr. Adam being the new head of Design. With the newest curriculum or modified style of lesson, it has implemented a more HANDS ON project based learning, where students are more capable to design and convert their concepts to real life with more technologies applied during the lessons.
If you are interested in taking Design, do keep in mind that it is important to approach the subject with an open mindset of trying new things and being curious. In addition to having an open mindset, being patient and having fortitude despite failure is just as important as well. With this mindset applied, it is easier to realize and see that this subject unlocks our inner creativity. Adding on, Design is being taught by Mr Adam, whom we can ensure fits right in. With his 15-year experience teaching both design and engineering, his enthusiasm and dedication is something students can look forward to, especially with the fact that he’s created a new club about kinetic art and animatronic.

This term, our school has also initiated a new community aimed to spread awareness and knowledge regarding sustainability, in which not only you and your family can participate to listen, but as well as taking action. There are steps that you can take part in and new knowledge you can acquire which will be a significant factor in making a difference in our environment. This event includes the action of recycling of various materials, EcoBricks, school garden and many more.
Despite the distinction between Design and Global Politics, both subjects are highly fun, recommended, and a suitable platform where students get to enhance their weaknesses and abilities which is not only advantageous for school but our everyday lives as well.
