Bahasa Indonesia & Economics Subject Article, Volume 1: March!

Hi Eagles!

We’re back with another subject article! After previously exploring the Arts subjects, this article will be focusing on the Bahasa Indonesia subject and Economics subject. The Bahasa Indonesia subject is compulsory for all students to study throughout their years in high school, and the Economics subject is one of the subjects students may take in Grade 11 and 12 DP. To start off, the OSIS team has interviewed the Bahasa Indonesia subject’s head of faculty, Ms. Meta.

Bahasa Indonesia is the national and official language in Indonesia. In Sekolah Ciputra, Bahasa Indonesia subject is a compulsory subject throughout all grade levels. In Sekolah Ciputra, even though it's an IB curriculum school, for Bahasa Indonesia subjects, the teaching materials given from the national curriculum that are provided by the Government is still applied. Some significant materials that are being teached include TLHO, short stories, anecdotes, debates, procedural text and other teaching materials or media. On the other hand, Bahasa Indonesia subjects will give advantages to support students with their ability in listening, speaking and writing in Bahasa Indonesia. This subject will be a very useful subject especially if students take Indonesian literature majors for their upcoming studies. It will support students who want to have a career in journalism, education, media production and many more.

Apart from that, Bahasa Indonesia is a fairly challenging subject. Teachers mostly find students having difficulties in writing and speaking. Difficulties that students have experienced in both the writing and speaking aspects are figuring out a proper writing structure, choosing the right formal words, proper pronunciation of words and many more. Aside from speaking and writing difficulties, some students face challenges in reading a novel as they don’t favor reading as something they adore doing. With this implication, Bahasa Indonesia teachers decided to give a variety of book genres per grade level to ensure that students won’t get bored reading the same type of genre of a book. Putting attention onto the student’s experience, we conducted an interview with a student who’s from the Netherlands. With the student from Grade 9, he shared his journey both dwelling on the struggles and development to being fluent in Bahasa Indonesia. In class, he would often initiate conversations on the topic of Indonesia culture and the parlance among Indonesian society with his teacher. This activity is said to have helped him learn the lexical, grammatical and even sentence structure of the Indonesian language. Not to mention, he’s emphasized on the effectiveness of this activity, crediting it to his teacher / Bu Meta’s motivational nature and cheery persona despite the fact that he’s admitted to struggling in the beginning of his learning journey. Ending his experience, he advises those to study a lot, pay close attention to whatever the teacher is teaching and never be late in doing your homework.

Apart from Bahasa Indonesia, Sekolah Ciputra offers Economics as part of its curriculum for students to take in both Grade 11 and Grade 12 Diploma Programme. With this being said, we’ve interviewed the Economics teacher and Executive Principal, Mr. Martin Blackburn, to get further information regarding this subject for students to be aware of when taking Economics as their subject. In addition, there are several jobs that Economics is suitable for, such as being an economist, and people who are interested in starting or entering the business industry as this subject offers them business studies that relate to the real world situations. For instance, theories on how the price may impact people’s mind or how factories may impact the environment as much in their production. Overall, Economics will harness students' ability to critically think, and become more wise in any given situation or responsibility. This subject is advantageous to support students who are interested in taking Business in their university studies because it provides the basis and foundation of the major. Furthermore, there are opportunities to work for the Government, specifically in the treasury department, or people working in private banks. Not only that but school teachers or professors are included.

Specifically on the students’ skills, the study of Economics helps improve balance and their ability to think out of the box as Economics not only studies the Economy itself but also externalities from human behavior and reality. This subject also teaches students to be open-minded because countries operate their economy differently from others. Although Economics is an interesting subject, students struggle to separate their bias or beliefs with the examples/theories given in this subject, especially in terms of human behavior and why they're behaving the way they’re behaving. To solve this problem, models are provided for students to analyze and exhibit the theory through repetition and practice. With various models given, students have the opportunity to analyze differently in terms of reasoning every week. While on the topic of students and economics we conducted an interview with a student from Grade 11 who took Economics as a subject. This student has shared that they now have a different understanding of Economics compared to their initial perception that it was simply the study of economy and the flow of money. They expressed that Economics was the study of people and their choices, the concept of scarcity as there are infinite wants and finite resources and how Economics can be applied in real world contexts. The student suggested that a useful tip that they have implemented was to book tutorial periods to ask for clarification and conduct self study. It is better to quell all unanswered questions rather than go into the next lesson forgetting or not understanding the previous concepts. Wenny Wibisono, explained that Economics was one of the 6 subjects they chose for DP because she wanted to study social sciences and felt economics would be a good start in building their foundational understanding of the market workings and how human behavior can have an effect on certain components of the supply and demand. Furthermore the student stated that Economics has helped them nurture their communication, comprehension, research and thinking skills which all link back to the IB Approaches to Learning skills.

To conclude, the Bahasa Indonesia subject teaches students both literature and creativity, allowing students to understand works in Indonesian and express themselves through assessments from a wide range of media such as creative writing, poetry and many more. On the other hand, the Economics subject allows students to understand human behavior, reality, and business concepts. Both these subjects are crucial, as they allow students to expand their creative thinking, be a bigger part of society, and learn more about how the world works.
