THE CIPUTRANEUR: “AH… I REMEMBER THE PANTS''
We students have gone to school for most of our lives, wearing school uniforms as part of our identity. Uniform represents equality; the message it provides to the students is that no one is superior or inferior to another. Despite having similar uniform designs for males and females, a tad bit of difference is that girls had to use skirts instead of pants. The idea of using skirts as uniform has been there since the beginning, and providing pants as an option will not impose a major change on the community.
Skirts are seen as the usual attire for schools to use as their uniform. Some may say that reminding females to sit appropriately and properly is important as it builds character and manners. From a very young age, females are constantly reminded to ensure their action is done appropriately, especially when sitting on the floor, or even bending down to tie their shoelaces. They are more than aware of their actions and have been educated on what they should, or should not, do. It is only right that we respect what each individual thinks about the idea of being comfortable, be it in the form of wearing pants or skirts.
Skirts are also seen as a symbol of femininity, but there are females who would much prefer using pants or at the very least, skorts (trouser skirts). Providing the option to wear pants will allow more comfortable attire for students. During the break period, many students spend their time catching up with each other. This includes playing sports. However, when this happens with some female students—since they wear skirts—they would require more time to change into, and out of, their skirts; consequently, it becomes a waste of time. It also seems like the majority of the students who play sports are boys, and they are able to feel comfortable and free within the pants they’re wearing.
The culture we have on how dresses or skirts correlate to females is not rejected, and is not entirely at fault either. It is a very true and justified culture that we experience on a daily basis. But just like the ever-changing world we live in right now, we should be more open to the changes, which is in this case, a change of fashion preferences. Living in a culture where pants are only seen as masculine hinders this change. Furthermore, the use of pants does not impact any individual negatively. Instead, it brings convenience and comfort in areas that are unfit to skirts.
